Endoscopy - An Advancement in Sinus and Skull Base Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Skull base and sinus surgery has evolved dramatically throughout the past century. It is not long ago that the maxillary sinus would principally be reached via an anterior ap‐ proach through the gingivobuccal sulcus of the oral cavity. The earliest days of endos‐ copy date back to the early 1900s, when Hirschmann used a modified cystoscope to examine the sinuses. Thereafter, modern endoscopy has seen advances not only in the types of endoscopes available, but also the types of interventions amenable to the endo‐ scopic approach.

Fungal infection of the sinus and anterior skull base
Abstract Background: Invasive fungal infection is an opportunistic infection caused commonly by mucoraccae and aspergillus. It mostly occurs in patients with underlying disease. Since it has a high mortality and morbidity rate, considering a treatment strategy seems necessary. Objective: Since there has not been a clear protocol for treating these patients, we decided to establish...
متن کاملThe Pediatric Anterior Skull Base: An Otolaryngologist’s Perspective
Anterior skull base tumors have traditionally posed a therapeutic challenge. However, the advancement of skull base and endoscopic surgery has allowed for more of these lesions to be amenable to surgical resection. Though common in the adult population, surgical approaches in the pediatric population is not widely described. This chapter discusses the presentation and treatment for various pedi...
متن کاملMinimally invasive surgery of the anterior skull base: transorbital approaches
Minimally invasive approaches are becoming increasingly popular to access the anterior skull base. With interdisciplinary cooperation, in particular endonasal endoscopic approaches have seen an impressive expansion of indications over the past decades. The more recently described transorbital approaches represent minimally invasive alternatives with a differing spectrum of access corridors. The...
متن کامل3D Rapid Prototyping for Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery: Applications in Image-Guidance, Surgical Simulation and Patient-Specific Modeling
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the role of advanced fabrication technology across a broad spectrum of head and neck surgical procedures, including applications in endoscopic sinus surgery, skull base surgery, and maxillofacial reconstruction. The initial case studies demonstrated three applications of rapid prototyping technology are in head and neck surgery: i) a mono-material parana...
متن کاملManagement of Carotid Artery Injury in Endonasal Surgery
Introduction Carotid artery injury (CAI) is the most feared and potentially catastrophic intraoperative complication an endoscopic skull base surgeon may face. With the advancement of transnasal endoscopic surgery and the willingness to tackle more diverse pathology, evidence-based management of this life-threatening complication is paramount for patient safety and surgeon confidence. Objective...
